Weather and the best time to visit

The first thing guests notice is the air. Tanah Rata sits at about 1,440 m and Brinchang at about 1,540 m, and the temperature barely changes from one month to the next. What does change is the rain, and the number of cars on the road.^1,2,3

Temperature

Average highs run from 21.1 C in December to 23.4 C in April, and average lows from 14.6 C in January to 16.1 C in May. The station's extremes on the same page are 27.9 C in May and 10.0 C in February, and the lowest ever recorded in the district is 7.8 C, on 1 February 1978. BOH, the tea company, puts it simply: 15 to 24 C all year.^3,4,5

In practice that means cool mornings, mild middays and chilly evenings, especially after rain. Humidity is high all year, 83 to 93% on the station's figures.³

The rainy seasons

Rain comes in two peaks. The first is April and May, with about 270 mm a month over 20 or 21 rain days. The second is longer and wetter: September to November, with 245 to 335 mm and 22 to 25 rain days a month. October is the wettest month of all, at 334.7 mm over 25 rain days.³

Heavy spells do cause trouble. On 11 September 2026, for example, a landslide closed a road in Tanah Rata for a time and flash floods hit houses in Brinchang. The forest office also closes the Mossy Forest for a while each rainy season.^6,7

The driest months

January and February are the driest, at 109.5 and 115.1 mm and 12 to 14 rain days. June is the drier spell in the middle of the year, at 145.1 mm and 15 rain days. July and August are moderate. Even the driest month still averages a rain day in every two or three, so pack for rain whatever you choose.³

Crowds matter as much as weather

The busiest times have nothing to do with the sky. Police in Cameron Highlands say the worst jams come in school holidays and at the end of the month, and during long holidays more than 10,000 cars a day have been reported coming up. The queue between Kea Farm, Brinchang and Tanah Rata can take an hour or more.^8,9,10

So when should you come?

• Least rain: January to February, or June.
• Quietest roads: a weekday outside the school holidays, away from the end of the month.
• Best of both: a weekday in late January or February that does not clash with Chinese New Year, or a weekday in June after the mid-year school holidays end.
• Wettest: October and November. Still lovely, still cool, but plan indoor things for the afternoons and check the Mossy Forest before you go.^3,8,11

Daylight is steady too. In Tanah Rata the sun rises a little after 7 am all year and sets between about 7.10 pm and 7.30 pm, so there is roughly twelve hours of light whatever the month.¹⁴
